Building Within A Forest

How do we move from “less harm” to a contribution of place?

Location: Sainte-Julie, Quebec

Size: 900 m2

Client: Confidential

Services: Living Story, Biomimicry/Biophilic Architecture

Design: B.Mondo, B+H Biomimicry

The key to our process is to design a building that is informed and guided by its environment. In this project, a progressive client wanted to design a building that could contribute to an 200-hectare forest, which they were using as private wellness retreat for an adjacent development that had no public amenities. Together with architects, B.Mondo, the client engaged B+H Biomimicry to collaborate unpack the Living Story of the place and use biomimicry to inspire the design for a 900m2 commercial facility. The goal was to know the opportunities, barriers, principles and key story lines of the forest ecosystem in order to create a more resilient and harmonious design.
